What Is the Meaning of Samadhi?

What is the meaning of samadhi?
People Meditating in Osho's Bedroom

The word Samadhi is used to mean only for two things:

Firstly, Samadhi is the term used for enlightenment.

Secondly, when a master ends his life by deciding to be covered under ground alive. Then on that spot is built some structure and that is known as the Samadhi of that master.

Many masters in India have done that. This always happens outdoors in an open space. The Mystic Lal’s master, Kumbhdas, had done that in Rajastan. You can read the full story in Osho talk on the Mystic Lal in the Hindi series of talks, Hansa To Moti Chuge. There was a Samadhi just outside the campus of our very first International Commune called “Vishwaneed” at Ajol, in Mehasana district in Gujarat, where long time ago some enlightened one had taken samadhi alive. There are many others too; it’s only a matter of research if one is interested in it.

Some masters take Jalsamadhi (Samadhi in water) wherein they walk into a river and disappear. Swami Ramateertha did that in the River Bhelangana in Tehri, Uttarakhand.

Any structure raised exactly at such spots is called a Samadhi or a Jalsamadhi of that master, as the case may be.

When someone’s flowers (ashes), including that of a master, are preserved out of love and reverence, that is not called a Samadhi.

Many people keep the ashes of their parents and other ancestors in their home. That is not a Samadhi. The small grave-like structures that are built on the Osho International Meditation Resort campus to preserve the ashes of Osho’s parents, Vimalkirti, Maitreya, and Sita Ma are not samadhis. These are memorials.

Osho’s flowers (ashes) are kept under his bed in Chuang Tzu Auditorium, which was rebuilt as his bedroom upon his request before he leaves his body.

Chuang Tzu is only a memorial of Osho where one could go and be in meditation. That is exactly what we do, we go there and meditate. There is nothing more to it; it is not that there is some area at the Meditation Resort which is called a Samadhi.

When Dr Amrito asked Osho what about his samadhi, he meant the same thing: Where to keep his flowers (ashes) as a memorial. That was an incorrect word used by the doctor, who being a non-Indian didn’t know the correct meaning and connotation of Samadhi.

Osho replies, “You just put my ashes in Chuang Tzu, under the bed.  And then people can come in and meditate there.”

He never uses the word Samadhi for his bedroom in Chuang Tzu in response to Dr Amrito’s query.

So, there is a big difference between the samadhi that Osho speaks of, enlightenment, and the traditional idea of all the old religions of the need for “places of worship.”

As Osho Explains:

“This statement, Aham brahmasmi, is a declaration of enlightenment – literally it means, ‘I am the divine, I am the ultimate, I am the absolute.’ It is a declaration that, ‘There is no other God than my own inner being.’ This does not mean that it is a declaration of a single individual about himself. It is a declaration, of course, by one individual, but it declares the potential of every individual.

“It denies God as a separate entity. It denies God as a creator. It denies God as a ruler. It simply denies the existence of God, other than in our own existence.

“It is the whole search of the Eastern genius.

“In thousands of years they have discovered only one thing: don’t look for God outside your own being. If you can find him you can find him only in one place and that is in you – other than you all the temples and all the mosques and all the synagogues and all the churches are inventions of the priests to exploit you. They are not in the service of God; on the contrary they are exploiting all the potential gods….

“But, unfortunately, even the people of this country – where this statement was made some five thousand years ago – have forgotten all about the dignity of human beings. This statement is nothing but the ultimate manifesto of man and his dignity.

“Even in this country, where such individuals existed who reached the ultimate awakening and illumination, there are people who are worshipping stones. There are people who are enslaved by ignorant priests. There are people who are living in the bondage of a certain religion, creed or cult. They have forgotten the golden age of the Upanishads.” 1

Yoga Pratap Bharati, was born 1941. He physically saw Osho for the first time in 1967 in Jabalpur, took sannyas in December 1971, and has been living with Osho since 1972. Before that he had worked in India’s government owned renowned iron and steel plant Bhilai Steel Plant for 7 years before he resigned in 1966.
